Apple Crisp

This is my go-to recipe for apple crisp.  I was tired of having to look for the scrap paper I wrote it down on every time I wanted to make apple crisp so hopefully having it here will make things a lot easier.  The key is to have a mix of sweet and tart apples, and adjust the sugar in the recipe accordingly.

Topping:
2/3 - 3/4 cups packed brown sugar
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup quick rolled oats
3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
3/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/3 cup margarine or salted butter, softened

5-6 large apples, peeled, cored and sliced

  • Preheat oven to 375F.
  • Grease an 8 x 8" glass pan.  Layer apples in the pan.  There should be enough to fill the pan, as the apples will reduce down once they cook and you don't want a flat apple crisp.
  • Combine all of the topping ingredients in a medium mixing bowl and blend with a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture is crumbly.  Sprinkle over top of the apples.
  • Bake for approximately 30 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and crisp.  Serve warm.
